At Warstones, we believe that a broad and balanced wider curriculum is essential to nurture every learner’s potential. Our wider curriculum complements the core subjects and is designed to meet the needs of all our pupils, reflecting our commitment to our values of Responsibility, Kindness, Resilience, Respect, and Aspiration.
A Curriculum Tailored for Our Community
We use Curriculum Maestro as the foundation for our wider curriculum, carefully adapting it to suit the unique needs of our school community. This approach ensures that all national curriculum objectives are met while remaining relevant and engaging for our learners.
Our curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced with clear progression, allowing skills and knowledge to develop in small, manageable steps.
This step-by-step progression builds steadily, year-on-year, creating a strong foundation where each new learning unit builds confidently on the last.
We place great importance on ensuring that every child—whether they are learning English as an additional language (21.3% of our learners), have special educational needs and disabilities (20.3%), or come from disadvantaged backgrounds (38.4% FSM)—can access and thrive within our curriculum.
Enriching Experiences and Opportunities
Our school grounds and resources, including for our playgroup, nursery, and Deaf Resource Base, provide an enriching environment where the wider curriculum comes to life. Pupils engage in:
Outdoor learning and forest school activities that promote environmental awareness and physical well-being.
Creative arts and music projects that allow self-expression and cultural appreciation.
Sporting events and competitions that build teamwork and healthy lifestyles.

Reflecting Our Vision and Values Through Learning
Our wider curriculum is not just about knowledge; it is also about character development and personal growth, aligned closely with our school values:
Responsibility: Pupils take ownership of their learning across subjects like science, history, geography, art, and physical education, developing independence and confidence.
Kindness and Respect: Collaborative projects and group activities foster empathy and respect for others, encouraging learners to appreciate diverse perspectives.
Resilience: Through challenges in problem-solving and creative work, pupils learn to persevere and bounce back from mistakes.
Aspiration: The curriculum inspires learners to set goals and strive for excellence, preparing them for future success.
Supporting Parents and the Community
We understand that parents and the wider community are key partners in our children’s education. We regularly share updates and examples of our wider curriculum activities through newsletters and social media, inviting families to celebrate their children’s achievements. We also hold regular events where families are invited to share in the work that the children complete, such as during the Science Fair, the Great Exhibition (humanities) and our Art Showcases. Each year, we invite families in during our open afternoon to see how the children learn.
