Maths at Warstones
At Warstones Primary School, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. We use the White Rose Maths scheme as the foundation of our curriculum, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum through carefully planned small-step progression. Lessons are designed to build knowledge and understanding sequentially, enabling pupils to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills with confidence. Through high-quality teaching, practical resources and opportunities to explain their mathematical thinking, we aim to foster a positive attitude towards maths and help all children become resilient, independent learners.
Every maths lesson is carefully structured to build confidence and deepen understanding. Lessons begin with a Flashback activity, which helps pupils retrieve and recall prior learning, strengthening their long-term memory and making connections between mathematical concepts. This is followed by a focused arithmetic session that revisits key skills and addresses any misconceptions before new learning is introduced. By securing pupils’ understanding of previous content and ensuring strong foundations, children are well prepared to engage with the main lesson and make sustained progress in mathematics.
