Reading Domains

At Warstones Primary School, we recognise the importance of reading as a life skill that will open doors to all subjects for children. We understand the significant role played by parents, teachers and support staff in supporting children to read with enjoyment and fluency.

Reading at Warstones

At warstones, we teach our reading to the children through the reading domains.

Children at Warstones are exposed to quality texts from EYFS and across the school, which both stimulate and assist the children to read. Along with these ‘core’ texts the children in EYFS and KS1 and where appropriate in KS2, children are taught the Read Write Inc. synthetic phonic scheme and use the Oxford Reading Tree Reading scheme to build their confidence in ‘decoding’ and the reading of high frequency words. In Key Stage Two, the children are exposed to 'real books', through the Accelerated Reader programme, when reading for pleasure, as well as taught through the use of whole class texts and genres with class novels encouraging children to try new authors and genres.

Key Stage 2 only:

Reading Challenge

THANK YOU so much for your amazing response to our whole school reading challenge. Over 100 children brought in their challenge cards after half term and we have had so many positive responses from children and parents. The photo's sent in were brilliant too!

Reading for Pleasure

To support reading for pleasure in our school, we have a reading area in every classroom, three amazing libraries and a limitless dedication to celebrating books and authors.

Here are some other ways we support reading for pleasure here at Warstones:

  • Class and whole school reading challenges

  • Weekly book club for children and a monthly ‘book and a brew’ session for parents

  • Everyone Reading in class

  • Celebrating World Book Day and World Poetry Day

  • Charity reading events supporting Book Aid and Read for Good

  • Reading padlets

  • Author visits, across the school

To further support our children’s reading for pleasure, we have a designated reading space alongside our new reading vending machine. Happy Reading!
