Reading at Warstones
At Warstones Primary School, we recognise the importance of reading as a life skill that will open doors to all subjects for children. We understand the significant role played by parents, teachers and support staff in supporting children to read with enjoyment and fluency.
At Warstones, children are immersed in high-quality texts from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) onwards, fostering a love of reading while supporting the development of essential literacy skills. Alongside these carefully selected core texts, pupils in EYFS and Key Stage 1, and where appropriate in Key Stage 2, are taught through the Read Write Inc. systematic synthetic phonics programme. They also access the Oxford Reading Tree scheme to develop confidence and fluency in decoding, word recognition and the reading of high-frequency words.
In Key Stage 2, pupils continue to engage with a rich range of high-quality literature mapped out through our whole school reading spine. Our children follow the Accelerated Reader programme, enabling them to practice key reading skills whilst supporting independent reading for pleasure. Carefully chosen class novels expose children to a variety of authors, themes and genres, encouraging them to broaden their reading experiences, deepen their comprehension skills and develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading.
