Pupil Parliament

At Warstones, we believe every learner’s voice matters. Our Pupil Parliament is a vital part of school life, reflecting our commitment as school to nurture responsibility, kindness, resilience, respect, and aspiration in all our pupils. This page explains how our Pupil Parliament works and how it empowers children to actively participate in shaping their school experience.

What is the Pupil Parliament?

The Pupil Parliament is made up of Members of Parliament (MPs) and Deputy MPs who have been democratically elected by their classmates. This process encourages responsibility and aspiration, as candidates prepare and deliver speeches outlining their manifesto — sharing the values and ideas that make them the best representatives for their peers.

How are MPs Elected?

Each candidate speaks to their class, explaining their goals and how they will represent their classmates’ views. This democratic process not only fosters resilience and respect but also helps pupils develop confidence and leadership skills.

The Role of MPs

Once elected, MPs have the important task of capturing the opinions and concerns of children in their class. They bring these views to Pupil Parliament meetings, where real decisions are made to improve school life. This ensures that every child feels heard and valued, embodying our core values of kindness and respect.

Making a Difference: Real Impact in School

A recent example of the Pupil Parliament’s work was the debate on whether to install hand driers in the Key Stage Two toilets. MPs gathered feedback from their classes, organised a vote, and then presented the results and their arguments to Mr Powell, our Headteacher, and Mr Penfold, our Chair of Governors. This project demonstrated how pupil voice can lead to tangible changes, encouraging responsibility and aspiration among our learners.

Why Pupil Parliament Matters

  • It promotes active citizenship and prepares pupils to engage with democratic processes.

  • It develops important skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and critical thinking.

  • It ensures pupils contribute to decisions that affect their daily school life, making the school a more inclusive and welcoming place.

  • It reflects our school vision by encouraging learners to be responsible, kind, resilient, respectful, and aspirational members of the community.

We warmly invite parents and the wider community to support our Pupil Parliament and celebrate the leadership and achievements of our pupils. If you would like to learn more or get involved, please contact the school office or visit us during our open events.

At Warstones Primary School, we are proud that our Pupil Parliament not only voices the views of our learners but also strengthens the values that make our school a nurturing and inspiring place to learn and grow.
